Our Courses
From first-time teen drivers to adults looking to sharpen their skills — we offer Virginia-certified programs designed to build confidence behind the wheel.
Behind The Wheel Course
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all teen drivers to complete a certified behind-the-wheel program and pass the road skills test before receiving their Driver's License. Students must hold a valid Driver Education Certificate before their first driving appointment.
Requirements Before You Start
Students must have the following before their first appointment:
Valid Virginia Learner's Permit
You must hold a valid Learner's Permit before beginning lessons. The permit must be held for at least 9 months before your Driver Training Certificate becomes valid.
Driver Education Certificate of Completion
Typically the pink sheet issued by your high school or wherever you completed your Driver's Education course.
Driving Log
Documentation showing at least 45 hours of driving practice, with a minimum of 15 hours completed after sunset.
Note: Adults 18 and older only need a valid Learner's Permit — no Driver Education certificate or driving log required.
What to Bring to Your First Appointment
Payment
Cash, check, Venmo, or Zelle accepted. Checks should be made payable to U Drive School of Motoring.
Copy of Your Learner's Permit
Bring a photocopy of your DMV-issued Learner's Permit.
Signed Driver Education Certificate
Your signed certificate of completion — typically the pink sheet from your school.
How the Program Works
The course is made up of seven appointments, each lasting at least 1 hour and 40 minutes. Every session is split equally — a minimum of 50 minutes behind the wheel with a certified instructor, and 50 minutes observing another student drive. This structure reinforces skills from both the driver's seat and the observer's seat.
Practice Sessions — Hands-on instruction covering vehicle controls, traffic laws, defensive driving, parking, highway driving, and road-test maneuvers. Each session builds on the last.
Road Skills Test — The final appointment is your official road skills exam, administered by your certified U Drive instructor.
Driver Training Certificate (DTS-B)
Once a student passes the road skills test, the instructor issues a Driver Training Certificate (DTS-B), which is valid for 180 days. When paired with a valid Learner's Permit, this certificate serves as a temporary Driver's License — but it only becomes active once both of the following conditions are met:
- The teen has reached 16 years and 3 months of age
- The Learner's Permit has been held for at least 9 months
After You Finish
Once the course is complete, U Drive submits your Driver Training Certificate directly to the Virginia DMV. Within three months, your local Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will mail a postcard with the date of your licensing ceremony, where you'll receive your official Virginia Driver's License.
Adult Waiver Course
Designed for adults who have some prior driving experience, the Adult Waiver Course is Virginia's streamlined path to a Driver's License for drivers 18 and over. No separate classroom requirement — this course handles everything.
